On July 22, 2020, Dr. Ara Melikyan, the Trade Representative of Russia in the UAE, paid visit to the Khalifa Industrial Zone Abu Dhabi (KIZAD), located in the emirate of Abu Dhabi. The visit was aimed at discussing opportunities and obtaining information on a potential project of the Russian food hub/wholesale distribution center in the KIZAD.
Under the project it is planned to lease cold storage facilities and build/use a grain silo in the KIZAD. The project is believed to be a mechanism of distribution of the Russian products in the UAE and the Gulf countries which includes being a part the Emirati strategic food reserve program.
Representatives of the KIZAD and the Abu Dhabi Ports, which runs the KIZAD, showed visual scheme and map of the currently operating industrial zone, existing premises and infrastructure and those scheduled for construction, provided conditions for obtaining a license, leasing offices and warehouses, as well as information on ways of implementing projects with the Russian participation.
In addition to the food hub scheme, the project potentially allows a partial localization of food processing. In addition, the KIZAD is currently considering localization projects for pharmaceutical production which also might be of interest to the Russian manufacturers in the respective field.
